We all make this pledge. At ball games, school
assemblies or civic club meetings, we stand with hands over hearts and
pledge "Liberty and Justice for All."
Liberty is about choice. No choices, no
liberty.
Consider healthcare - in a free country, who decides which medicine you
take? Politicians? Or you and your doctor? Whether it's choosing
experimental medicine that's not FDA approved or importing lower-cost
prescriptions from Canada, shifting medical decisions from politicians
back to individuals will increase your freedom of choice and your
liberty.
Or consider same sex marriage - doesn't separation of church and state
mean that politicians must leave holy matrimony to the clergy and limit
the state's interest to civil union contracts for everyone?
Ensuring equal rights for individuals when it comes to inheritance,
benefits, taxes and child custody will extend justice to all.
Or education - we spend more and more money every year, but our failing
reading and math scores don't really improve. We need to give
parents, students, and teachers more choices.
On every issue I ask, "Who decides?" When your choices are
peaceful, then you should decide what is best for you and your
family. That's the way I will lead on every issue, every time. If
you want the freedom to make your own decisions, then vote for
me. If you want others to make the important decisions in your
life - how your child is educated, who you can marry, what kinds of
medications to take, and how much to pay for them - then you have
plenty of other choices on your ballot. But if, when you put your hand
over your heart and pledge "with Liberty and Justice for All," you mean
it, then elect RUTH BENNETT as Governor of Washington.
